Belfry Witches

Belfry Witches was a television show broadcast by the BBC during its CBBC slot. It ran for just over a year, airing in September 1999 and running its thirteenth and final episode in November 2000.

Plot

The show followed two witches, Skirty Marm (Laura Sadler) and Old Noshie (Lucy Davis) as they caused mischief in a quiet English village named Tranter's End, which they fled to after being banished their home on Witch Island.

The show revolved around the two witches, the friendly of the church whose belfry they are in, Chris Tucker (played by Scott Charles), the resident "naughty boy", a nasty woman named Mrs. Bagg-Meanly (played by Paula Jacobs), and the Head Witch who banished Skirty Marm and Old Noshie - Mrs. Abercrombie (Jan Harvey). The show was called 'Belfry Witches' because the two witches lived in a church belfry.

Characters

Skirty Marm

Skirty Marm, along with Old Noshie, is one of the main characters of the show. She fancies herself as the brains of the double act. She is not, however, as clever as she thinks. Her brilliant ideas usually lead her and Old Noshie into loads of trouble!

Skirty’s favourite food are spiders but she also eats bats and worms from time to time. It is hard to miss Skirty Marm as she has a great talent for grabbing the spotlight. Despite being a witch she tries to be good and secretly admires the way that humans act. She spends loads of time trying to explain humans to Noshie but her explanations are normally wrong. Skirty is incredibly vain and worryingly impulsive but she is also intensely loyal to her friends.

Old Noshie

Old Noshie, along with Skirty Marm, is one of the main characters. She is nearly 200 years old, but this is young for witches on Witch Island - where she is regarded as a big kid.

Old Noshie loves to eat newts and bugs. She is rather gormless and is usually happy to be led by her brighter friend. She has moments of independence, however, and often gets annoyed with Noshie when she isn't treated as equal. She also has a broomstick that never does what it is told and she isn’t pleased that she got a cheap broomstick and Skirty Marm got the one made of the finest twigs. Beneath her ragged exterior, she has a kind heart and a very well concealed sentimental streak. She loves a joke- especially if it is a bit vulgar!
